Podcast: Eye Injuries in the Emergency
Department
Rand: From the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, I’m Rand
Gardner with Healthcare 411. Information for better health.
According to AHRQ data, in 2008, Americans in rural areas were five times more
likely than urban residents to be treated in emergency departments for eye
injuries.
AHRQ expert, Dr. Ryan Mutter has more:
Dr. Mutter: Our research also found that 97 percent of patients treated
in the emergency department for eye injuries were treated and released without
admission to the hospital. Moreover, we found that the three most common eye
injuries were cornea scratches, lacerations of the eyelid, and bruises to the
eye. Many of these injuries were caused by being hit by someone or something,
such as in sports or in a fight. Other causes included falling, getting a
corrosive substance in the eye, motor vehicle accidents, and insect and animal
bites.

Human Services.
