||Podcast: E-Prescribing and Reducing Medication
Debra: From the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, I’m Debra
James with Healthcare 411. Information for better health.
E-prescribing is a system for doctors to send prescriptions electronically using
the internet and it helps prevent medication errors often caused by poor
handwriting. It can also can warn doctors about possible drug interactions - and
may help save money by letting doctors choose lower cost or generic drugs.
To encourage this practice, many insurers now offer lists of approved
prescription drugs known as formularies. The combination of these lists and
E-prescribing means that patients may save money. Dr. Joel Weissman, explains.
Dr. Weissman: As e-prescribing systems become more widely available and
easier to use, their greater use among doctors is likely. In our study, we found
that complete use of e-prescribing systems with formulary decision support could
reduce prescription drug spending.
