Radiocast: Treating Osteoporosis
Rand: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. October 20
was World Osteoporosis Day, an opportunity for health leaders to talk about what
they’re doing to reduce the rate of osteoporosis and for patients to learn more
about how to treat their condition. Osteoporosis causes bones to become fragile
and break easily. While prevention is key, for many people treatment after
diagnosis can improve quality of life. And a guide from AHRQ can help patients
compare their many treatment options. AHRQ expert Dr. Gurvaneet Randhawa:
Dr. Randhawa: There are many treatments available for osteoporosis and it
can be challenging to choose the best one. The guide draws on the latest,
unbiased scientific evidence that compares the benefits and risks.
Rand: The guide, which is designed for women who have gone through
menopause, is called "Osteoporosis Treatments That Help Prevent Broken Bones."
It’s available for free online at
effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov. Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency
for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services. I’m Rand Gardner for Healthcare 411.
